Archive for December, 2008

I am starting on the wonderful road to becoming enlightened with jQuery. What I have decided to do is create a semi regular post, describing what I have learnt and explaining how to do things as I learn them. Hopefully this should help some of you guys if you want to start to learn.
Why jQuery? Well it’s like a light weight JavaScript. I have always wanted to learn a good strong design scripting language that would help me develop my web building skills. jQuery will give me the scripting experience to then go on and learn more languages like it. jQuery also has a familiar way of selecting objects to manipulate, using CSS ID’s and Class’ which is great for someone like me!
As they say, who ever “they” are, “Stay tuned folks” and in the next few days you should see the appearance of my first jQuery tutorial style blog post.

Its freezing, and its been freezing for ages… We don’t normally get this in December in Manchester at least. Normally its about 10C, wet, but at least a little warm. For the past month now it’s been mostly around the 4C mark, frosty almost every morning and we have even had snow. Actually pretty much the whole country saw some of the white stuff. Plus fitting vinyl in a cold cold Manchester city centre isn’t good for the soul…
With the cost of energy prices and the fact that our heating is about as good as a candle heating a barn in a -20C hurricane, I fear our bill is going to be quite large. Hopefully the recent energy regulator stuff will calm the prices down a little; well at least I hope so.

CSS Block Elements
There has been an increasing amount of DIV’s being used these days, I know I used to be one of those who used them a little too often too. But why do we use DIV’s so much? A DIV element is a brilliant way of piecing together your site, helping you realise your layout dreams. So why am I speaking like a mad man? Why am I claiming DIV’s are used too much?
Because they are!

Im almost childishly excited about this release… Not because anything really changes up front, but because it all changes in the back end!
A really nice new overhaul of the admin section awaits us in Wordpress v2.7 which to be frank, makes me giggle like a school girl. I’m such a geek…
You can download the RC1 of Wordpress 2.7 here
Wordpress is by far the best Blogging/CMS that I have used, if you are thinking about getting into it, there are huge amounts of resources out there to help you learn, here are just two of my favourite places…
CSS Tricks
CSS Tricks has become my home recently; it’s such a good resource for designers and developers. In this post Chris, the author of CSS Tricks, goes into some detail about developing your freshly sliced PSD into a Wordpress theme! You will also find tonnes of useful stuff there, on many other Design/CSS related issues!
Theme development Screencasts
Wordpress Week
Web Designers Wall
There is also another great resource here with great tips and a few free, very well made, Wordpress templates.
Installing Wordpress Locally
Building Custom Wordpress Themes
Exporting and Importing Wordpress
These are just some of the many resources out there to help you get into Wordpress, and there is no better time! Everybody loves Wordpress!

So I was able to develop the design a little on the site, it’s good to be able to work on your own site once in a while…
I re-did my header, and have lovely new post boxes, which has been needing doing for a while now… hopefully I will be spending a little more time on it to finish off little bits and bats, but over all I’m quite happy
The front page also tells you about what I do now, which is always good, although I am already thinking of how I can improve it… nothing is ever perfect… I get bored of design quickly.
Hope you like it anyway, hopefully I can develop the website into more of a resource as well soon.
