The Twitter Design Community; words can not describe what greatness these guys bring to my day. Working as a freelancer, from home, I would say the only thing I miss is the office chatter. The funny things people say, the great stuff they help you out with and mostly that social side of life that can easily be lost in freelance work.
Twitter is my office chatter. Maybe I tweet too much, maybe I use it incorrectly – I dunno… Without it my motivation would have taken a large hit. (more…)
Thank goodness the kids went back to school today; they are a distraction… maybe now I can get down to writing this first jQuery blog! Christmas is a strange time of year, we don’t celebrate it but it still seems to make you loose track of time. Why is it that no one knows what day it is during Christmas… Crazy.
Ahh well, its all over and we can get on with things again!
I am starting on the wonderful road to becoming enlightened with jQuery. What I have decided to do is create a semi regular post, describing what I have learnt and explaining how to do things as I learn them. Hopefully this should help some of you guys if you want to start to learn.
Why jQuery? Well it’s like a light weight JavaScript. I have always wanted to learn a good strong design scripting language that would help me develop my web building skills. jQuery will give me the scripting experience to then go on and learn more languages like it. jQuery also has a familiar way of selecting objects to manipulate, using CSS ID’s and Class’ which is great for someone like me!
As they say, who ever “they” are, “Stay tuned folks” and in the next few days you should see the appearance of my first jQuery tutorial style blog post.
Its freezing, and its been freezing for ages… We don’t normally get this in December in Manchester at least. Normally its about 10C, wet, but at least a little warm. For the past month now it’s been mostly around the 4C mark, frosty almost every morning and we have even had snow. Actually pretty much the whole country saw some of the white stuff. Plus fittingvinyl in a cold cold Manchester city centre isn’t good for the soul…
With the cost of energy prices and the fact that our heating is about as good as a candle heating a barn in a -20C hurricane, I fear our bill is going to be quite large. Hopefully the recent energy regulator stuff will calm the prices down a little; well at least I hope so.
That’s it I have had enough, IE 6 needs to die. People need to be educated! It does not take much to download a browser; you can even get them off magazine cover disks! IE 6, I’m calling time on you! (more…)
So I was able to develop the design a little on the site, it’s good to be able to work on your own site once in a while…
I re-did my header, and have lovely new post boxes, which has been needing doing for a while now… hopefully I will be spending a little more time on it to finish off little bits and bats, but over all I’m quite happy
The front page also tells you about what I do now, which is always good, although I am already thinking of how I can improve it… nothing is ever perfect… I get bored of design quickly.
Hope you like it anyway, hopefully I can develop the website into more of a resource as well soon.
Doing a lot more digging into the capabilities of Wordpress has really helped me develop my skills over the past month or so. The source for this digging was mainly due to the fact that I have been designing/developing a website for the lovely people at Salford University Boat Club. You can see the website as it is at the moment here.
So with all that digging came the itch to refresh the website – unfortunately I’m battling with an idea for the front page, every time I get one, I make it, then dislike it… So I apologise for the lack of a decent front page, although I am sure you will spare me the wrath of your judgement, while I try and make something pretty
I have also been enjoying Twitter recently! I’ve been following the writers of some of my favourite places on the web, and its nice to make links across the world to other self employed individuals and learning off each others experience, links, posts and all that. I don’t think Twitter is very big over here in the UK, it definitely seems bigger over in the US anyway, but if you spend a lot of time at the computer I would recommend it, it’s a good laugh and a nice way to stay in touch.
So expect a lot more content to follow, and the look to develop into something more finished. I hopefully will have my first How-to style thing about vectors, vinyl and all things cuttable.
Which I believe is true… look how out of date everything is! Also the amount of content is shocking… I think I have a problem with blogging as I don’t think what I do is of interest to anyone else. I suppose that’s just because I don’t really find other peoples “Life” blogs very interesting.
“I went to the shop and bought some milk” isn’t as enthralling as some people think, and surely that can just be added to Facebook (other social networking sites are available).
Although I do read a lot of blogs, they all seem to be design related and a lot of that within the Web sector. What can I say, I am a geek… perhaps a more arty geek than most, but still a HTML/CSS/CMS geek.
So, because of the terrible lack of bloggage, I have decided to write some wrongs. I am going to try and post semi regularly, things that I find that could help the rest of the design community. So any links, tutorials and useful things like that I will be posting up here. I might even give you some insights in to what I am up to… if it’s interesting that is.
Actually I will write a post about how to create vector art that is “cuttable”. As I work with vinyl one of the biggest things in the vinyl cutting world is the mistakes you get in artwork that is supposedly “ready to cut” from those cool cats at your local design studio. I think that might be interesting to some.
Anyway, I promise not to post about my cat, its friends or relatives, or the fact that I don’t even have a cat really.
So I just found this, and it looks pretty fun! It’s from the ever growing trend of web released media! Check out the trailor below, and here is a link to the site…
