The Power of Twitter
13/05/09 :: Posted by RobIn becoming firm friends with @darylsws on twitter, he is one of the web designer types in the cake and biscuit abundant offices of Ebuyer.com, the call came out one day that he was looking for an icon.
Now with the weight of a deadline pushing down on his shoulders he called out to the twitter community to point him in the direction of a specific icon. He was looking for a medical PC Health check icon.
Grabbing my cape, mask and Wacom, I set to work to help this friend in distress…
15 mins later and I had created this:

PC Health Check Icon
Ok it’s a pretty bog standard icon, nice enough and all that, I sent it through to Daryl and he was very grateful, not only that but he used it. Not bad for a quickie from me, but it also took a weight of his shoulders.
Here it is live: PC Health Check Remote Assistance
Twitter is a great tool to get together with a community of people who share the same things in common as you. Don’t just spam links or tell people about how your tea has gone cold, and the cat needs letting out, help each other out!
As a freelancer, sitting at home, twitter is an awesome tool for connection. For me twitter is my office chat, and office chat is probably the only thing I miss about the office job.
What is the morel of the story? When you can do it, go the extra mile with your twitter contacts, you can brighten their day!

Great post Rob!
I have to say that when I put out my call for an icon I was simply hoping that someone had seen the sort of icon i needed, but you really went out of your way to create this icon and for that I am still very grateful.
Twitter is still something I find quite hard to explain to people, but if I was to use an example of how incredibly useful it can be then this would be it. Without Twitter our paths would likely have never crossed and my attempt at a ‘Healthcheck’ icon probably wouldn’t have passed muster!
Many moons ago I freelanced for a bit and the one thing that really got to me was the lack of communication that I was able to have with other Designers. If only Twitter had been around then I might still be freelancing now.
Thanks again for your help with the icon Rob, you’re a Gent and a Scholar and I’ll see if we can sort out your biscuit allocation. ;o)
PS. Love the jQuery comment box – VERY slick!
Congratulations on the site launch.. I am a fan = ) and you are right Twitter is truly a powerful tool to reach out and share. I love the logo btw, simple and yet it conveys what it was meant to express. Great job
Hehe thanks for the replies guys,
@Daryl – No probs
@Misty – hehe I am honoured
Everyone should use twitter, especially professionals…
cool!
You have a website and didn’t tell about it?! What a shame
Great logo! Indeed, twitter is a great place to connect and contribute.
Daryl has a great point about Twitter being very hard to explain! This is a fantastic example of the benefits of being a part of such a huge network and community.
Great article mate! Twitter has indeed been fundamental in branching out a web presence and forming a strong bond between designers and developers alike, creating a truly diverse and equipped network of allys and friends. This is great proof of that bond. Thanks for sharing!
P.S. All your tweets are belong to us.
@Sasha – hehe thx and welcome! lol
@Sarah – yup its indeed an awesome place…
@Marcus – Thx dude
@everyone – yea its amazing what contacts and opportunities have come out of 140 chars
Nice post Rob. I am overwhelmed by how much twitter has changed the way we communicate with one another. I have been loving all the new people I am meeting on twitter, and looks like I may even get to meet a few of the guys here pretty soon. (@aaroni268 and @iamgarth)
Sadly, this is the first time I have visited your site, and blog, but will definitely be back and leaving more comments.
Cheers!

That’s my life too. I used to work in an agency where colaborating with coworkers was the norm an interactions like the one you and Daryl had happened every day.
When I first went solo that’s definitely what I missed the most of working in an office. Twitter has become my virtual water cooler. I can catch up with people, hear good stories and once and a while have people go out of their way to help me. Good post.
@kyle steed – Hey thx, and yea its awesome
I look forward to your visits!
@Brad – Yea it keeps me sane, hehe, keep doing the comics Brad, they are awesome
